The study examined the application of social media as a trend in science and technology in teaching
and learning in Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research
was employed for the study. Three research questions and one null hypothesis guided the study. Data were collected
using a researcher-developed questionnaire titled, “Application of Social Media in Teaching and Learning
Questionnaire”, (ASMTLQ). Three experts, two in Educational Management and one in Measurement and
Evaluation validated the instrument. A reliability test of 0.83 was obtained using Cronbach Alpha. Instrument was
administered to 341 lecturers at Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu. Mean and Standard
deviation were used to answer the research questions and null hypothesis was tested using z-test at .05 level of
significance and a critical value of 1.96. Results revealed that some of the lecturers know some of these social media
tools. 73% have access to them but do not utilize them for teaching and learning. There was however no significant
difference in its utilization between male and female lecturers. Recommendations include lecturers learning how to
use them to improve teaching and enhance students’ learning.
